A while back, I was invited to an event at the University of Virginia, and one of the highlights was an invitation to see originals of the great Pat Oliphant. (Oliphant donated nearly 7000 pieces of his work to UVA). It was a fantastic experience!
I can share photos of other pieces from the collection later, but this time I want to focus on this particular cartoon…
… Studying an artist’s original artwork is always exciting. Seeing the pencil lines beneath the ink, finding the successful strokes done directly in ink without any pencil underneath, the mistakes corrected with white-out...
… It’s a testament to the craftsmanship involved in this work and a reminder that even the great masters make mistakes from time to time…
… What particularly amazes me about this specific cartoon is not just the number of characters Oliphant drew, but the mastery of his pen when inking them, giving them precisely the expressionist quality that the subject of the drawing required. A beautiful dance of the grotesque, full of movement, captured with loose, flowing lines that give shape to the misshapen...
… It reminds me entirely of another of my all-time favorite artists, Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, a fantastic Spanish painter, illustrator, and cartoonist.
